In this body of work, the traditional board game pawn—a symbol of strategy, control, and sometimes sacrifice—becomes much more than a simple game piece. Scaled to 35 cm in height and rendered in acrylic glass, these pawns transcend their usual context, inviting viewers to consider their place within life’s larger game.
The transparency and vibrant colors evoke a sense of playfulness, yet they stand in stark contrast to the more profound underlying theme: Are we all pawns in a grand, unseen game? How much control do we truly have over the roles we play in life, and how much are we moved by external forces?
At this enlarged scale, the pawns—once passive figures—now demand attention. They become stand-ins for the human condition, calling into question notions of agency, choice, and the societal or invisible "hands" that shape our paths. The see through and modern material choice hint at both the transparency and complexity of these forces in our contemporary world.
By presenting these pawns as bold, transparent objects, the work challenges viewers to contemplate their own role in the larger game of existence, blurring the lines between player and piece.
